Six ways to block your card. Pick the fastest.
Whether you lost your card, it got stolen, or you suspect unauthorized usage — blocking your debit/ATM card is the first and most critical step. Modern banking offers multiple instant blocking channels. You don't need to visit a branch. You can block your card in under 2 minutes using any of the methods below.
Block via Net Banking
Fastest method — works 24×7
Net banking is the most reliable way to block your card. It works instantly, gives you a confirmation reference number, and lets you request a replacement card in the same session.
- Log in to your bank's net banking portal
- Go to "Cards" → "Debit Cards" section
- Select "Block Card" or "Hotlist Card"
- Choose the card to block (if multiple)
- Select reason: Lost / Stolen / Damaged / Fraud
- Confirm with OTP sent to registered mobile
- Save the reference number for tracking
- Card blocked instantly — no further transactions possible
- Request replacement card (delivered in 5–7 working days)
- Replacement fee: ₹200–₹300 + GST (varies by bank)
Block via Mobile Banking App
Most convenient — block from anywhere
Mobile banking apps offer one-tap card blocking. This is often the fastest method since you're already logged in on your phone. Most apps have a prominent "Block Card" button on the home screen or cards section.
- SBI YONO: Login → Service Requests → Card Blocking
- HDFC Mobile: Login → Cards → Block Card
- ICICI iMobile: Login → Cards & Forex → Block Card
- Axis Mobile: Login → Cards → Manage → Block
- PNB ONE: Login → Value Added Services → Card Hotlisting
- Temporary block option — block and unblock anytime
- Toggle ON/OFF for online, POS, contactless, ATM usage
- Set transaction limits per channel
Block via SMS (No Internet Needed)
Works even without internet or smartphone
SMS-based card blocking is the best fallback when you don't have internet access. Send a specific keyword from your registered mobile number to the bank's SMS banking number. The card is blocked within seconds.

Replace XXXX with the last 4 digits of your card number. SMS must be sent from your registered mobile number.
Block via Phone Banking (Toll-Free)
Speak to a human — available 24×7
All banks have 24×7 toll-free phone banking for card blocking. This is ideal if you're not tech-savvy or don't have access to net banking. Keep your account number or card number ready for verification.
| Bank | Toll-Free Number | IVR Path |
|---|---|---|
| SBI | 1800 11 2211 | Press 1 → Press 3 for card blocking |

Block via ATM (Self-Service)
Block at any ATM — no login required
Some banks allow you to block your card directly from any ATM of the same bank. Insert your card, enter the PIN, and look for "Card Block" or "Hotlist Card" in the menu. This method is useful if you don't have your phone or internet access.
- Insert your card at any ATM of your bank
- Enter your ATM PIN
- Navigate to "Other Services" or "Card Services"
- Select "Block Card" or "Hotlist Card"
- Confirm the action — card is blocked instantly
⚠️ Not all banks support ATM-based card blocking. Check with your bank. If your card is already lost/stolen, you cannot use this method.
Block via Branch Visit
Last resort — but most comprehensive
Visit your home branch with your passbook and identity proof. Fill out a "Card Hotlisting Form" and submit it. The branch can also help you file a dispute for any fraudulent transactions and initiate a replacement card request simultaneously.
- Carry: Passbook, identity proof (Aadhaar/PAN), and a written application
- File a written complaint for any unauthorized transactions
- Request replacement card — typically delivered in 5–7 working days
Temporary Block vs Permanent Block
🔒 Temporary Block
- Card is temporarily disabled — you can unblock it anytime
- Use when: You misplaced the card at home and expect to find it
- Available via: Mobile app (most banks), net banking
- No replacement fee — same card works after unblocking
🚫 Permanent Block (Hotlisting)
- Card is permanently deactivated — cannot be unblocked
- Use when: Card is lost, stolen, or you suspect fraud
- Available via: All 6 methods listed above
- New card issued with different number, CVV, and expiry
What to Do After Blocking
1. File an FIR (If Stolen)
If your card was stolen, file a First Information Report (FIR) at the nearest police station. The bank may require a copy of the FIR to process zero-liability claims for fraudulent transactions.
2. Check Recent Transactions
Review your last 7 days of transactions via net banking or the mobile app. Report any unauthorized transactions to the bank immediately. You have the right to dispute them under RBI's zero-liability policy.
3. Update Auto-Pay Mandates
If you had standing instructions (EMI, SIP, utility bills, subscriptions) linked to the blocked card, update them with your new card details once the replacement arrives to avoid missed payments.
