What is an IFSC Code?

Everything you need to know about India's Financial System Code — the backbone of every digital bank transfer in India.

IFSC Code — Definition

IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It is a unique 11-character alphanumeric code assigned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to every bank branch that participates in online fund transfer systems such as NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS. Think of IFSC as a digital address for your bank branch — without it, money cannot reach the correct destination in India's electronic payment network.

Every time you transfer money online, pay a bill, receive a salary, or make an EMI payment, the IFSC code is silently working in the background to route your funds accurately to the correct bank and branch — across 1,77,632+ branches nationwide.

How to Find Your IFSC

  • 1. Cheque Book: Printed on the MICR band at the bottom of every cheque leaf issued by your bank.
  • 2. Passbook: The first page of your bank passbook lists the branch IFSC code clearly.
  • 3. Net Banking / App: Login to your bank's app → Account Details → IFSC code is displayed.
  • 4. IFSCTeam Search: Enter your bank name, city, or branch above to instantly retrieve the verified IFSC code.

Where IFSC Code is Used

NEFT — National Electronic Funds Transfer
Settled in half-hourly batches. Available 24×7. No minimum/maximum limit set by RBI.
RTGS — Real Time Gross Settlement
Instant, real-time transfer. Minimum ₹2 Lakh. Best for high-value transactions.
IMPS — Immediate Payment Service
Instant transfer, 24×7×365. Works on holidays. Limit up to ₹5 Lakh per transaction.
Important: Bank Mergers & Defunct IFSC Codes

Due to RBI-mandated bank mergers (e.g., Allahabad Bank → Indian Bank, Dena Bank → Bank of Baroda), thousands of IFSC codes have been deactivated. If your transfer fails, your old IFSC code may be defunct. IFSCTeam automatically maps legacy IFSC codes to their current active replacements, saving you from failed transactions and penalties.
