No Minimum Balance Required

Banking without barriers.

A zero balance savings account lets you enjoy core banking services without maintaining any minimum balance. Whether you're a student, daily wage worker, or someone who wants a secondary account with no commitment — zero balance accounts are the perfect entry point to formal banking. Thanks to RBI's financial inclusion initiatives, every Indian can now open one.

What is a Zero Balance Account?

A zero balance savings account (also called a Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account or BSBDA) is a type of bank account where you are not required to maintain any minimum average balance (MAB). Unlike regular savings accounts that charge penalties of ₹200-600 per quarter for non-maintenance of minimum balance, zero balance accounts have no such charges.

These accounts were introduced under RBI's guidelines for financial inclusion. They provide basic banking facilities — deposit, withdrawal, ATM/debit card, passbook, and mobile banking — without the burden of maintaining a minimum balance.

What You Get

  • Free RuPay debit card
  • Passbook and cheque book (limited leaves)
  • Mobile/Internet banking
  • Deposit and withdrawal at branch
  • SMS alerts and mini statements

Limitations

  • Maximum 4 withdrawals per month (free)
  • Total credit capped at ₹1 lakh per year
  • Maximum balance ₹50,000 at any time
  • No overdraft or loan facility
  • Cannot hold another savings account in same bank

How to Open Online — 5 Steps

1

Choose Your Bank & Account Type

Compare banks from the table above. For PMJDY benefits (insurance + overdraft), choose a PSU bank. For digital-first experience, choose Kotak 811 or AU Digital Savings.

2

Keep Documents Ready

You'll need: PAN Card (or Form 60 if no PAN), Aadhaar Card (for e-KYC), a recent passport-size photo, and your mobile number linked to Aadhaar for OTP verification.

3

Visit Bank Website or Download App

Go to the bank's official website or download their mobile banking app. Look for "Open Savings Account" or "Instant Account Opening". Select "Zero Balance" or "BSBDA" as the account variant.

4

Complete Video KYC

Enter your Aadhaar number and verify with OTP. Then complete a 2-3 minute video call with a bank representative. They'll ask you to show your PAN card and confirm basic details. This replaces the need to visit a branch.

5

Account Activated — Start Banking

Once KYC is approved (usually within 24 hours), your account is activated. You'll receive your account number, customer ID, and debit card (delivered within 5-7 working days). Set up mobile banking and you're ready to go.
