The Transfer Trifecta

Three systems. One goal. Different rules.

Every time you open your net banking app to transfer money, you're presented with three options: NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS. They all move money from account A to account B — but their speed, cost, limits, and ideal use cases are fundamentally different. Choosing the wrong one can mean delayed payments, failed transactions, or unnecessary charges.

Which One Should You Pick?

1

Is your transfer amount ₹2,00,000 or above?

YES →

Use RTGS

Real-time settlement. No upper limit. Minimum ₹2 lakh.

NO →

Continue to Step 2

2

Do you need the money to arrive instantly?

YES →

Use IMPS

Instant 24x7. Up to ₹5 lakh. Small fee may apply.

NO →

Continue to Step 3

3

Is it a non-urgent, bulk payment (salary, vendor)?

YES →

Use NEFT

Batch processing. Usually free. No amount limit.

Understanding Each System

NEFT

The Batch Processor

NEFT operates on a Deferred Net Settlement (DNS) basis. Transactions are accumulated and processed in 48 half-hourly batches throughout the day. This means your transfer may take anywhere from a few minutes to up to 2 hours, depending on when you initiate it relative to the next batch window.

Key advantage: No minimum or maximum limit. Completely free at most banks for digital transactions. Ideal for salary disbursements, recurring vendor payments, and any transfer where instant settlement isn't critical.

Best for: Salary & Vendor Payments
RTGS

The Heavy Lifter

RTGS settles transactions individually and continuously on a gross basis — meaning each transaction is processed one-by-one in real time without netting against other transactions. The RBI guarantees immediate, irrevocable settlement.

Key constraint: The ₹2 lakh minimum makes RTGS unsuitable for small transfers. But for large-value transactions — property purchases, business settlements, inter-bank transfers — RTGS is the gold standard with zero upper limit.

Minimum: ₹2,00,000
IMPS

The 24x7 Instant Messenger

IMPS was the first system to offer 24x7x365 instant transfers in India, even before NEFT and RTGS went 24x7. Managed by NPCI, it guarantees sub-second settlement regardless of the day or time — including Sundays, bank holidays, and 3 AM on Diwali.

Unique feature: IMPS supports transfers via mobile number + MMID, eliminating the need for account number and IFSC code. The ₹5 lakh per-transaction cap is the only limitation.

Best for: Emergency & Instant Transfers

2026 Transfer Charges

The RBI has mandated that savings account customers should not be charged for NEFT and RTGS transactions initiated through digital channels (net banking, mobile banking). However, charges may apply for branch visits. IMPS charges are determined by individual banks within NPCI guidelines.

Amount Range NEFT RTGS IMPS
Up to ₹10,000 FREE N/A (min ₹2L) ₹0 – ₹5 + GST
₹10,001 – ₹1,00,000 FREE N/A (min ₹2L) ₹5 – ₹10 + GST
₹1,00,001 – ₹2,00,000 FREE N/A (min ₹2L) ₹10 – ₹15 + GST
₹2,00,001 – ₹5,00,000 FREE FREE ₹15 + GST
Above ₹5,00,000 FREE FREE N/A (max ₹5L)

* Charges shown are for digital channels (net banking / mobile app). Branch-assisted transfers may incur additional fees. Always verify with your specific bank.

The IFSC Code: Your Money's GPS

For all three transfer methods — NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS (via account number) — the IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is the critical routing identifier. It's an 11-character alphanumeric code that tells the banking network exactly which bank and branch should receive the funds.

An incorrect IFSC code can cause your transfer to fail, bounce back after several days, or — in rare cases — land in the wrong account if the account number coincidentally exists at the wrong branch. Always verify IFSC codes on IFSCTeam before initiating any transfer.

Real-World Examples

Paying ₹50 Lakhs for a Property

Use RTGS. The amount exceeds ₹2 lakh, so RTGS is available. You get real-time, irrevocable settlement — critical for high-value transactions where timing and finality matter. The seller sees the funds in their account within seconds.

RTGS ✓ — Instant, irrevocable, no upper limit

Emergency Hospital Payment at 2 AM

Use IMPS. You need ₹45,000 transferred instantly at 2 AM on a Sunday. IMPS is the only option that guarantees sub-second settlement 24x7x365. NEFT batch processing would delay this by up to 2 hours.

IMPS ✓ — Instant, 24x7, under ₹5L limit

Monthly Salary Disbursement (50 Employees)

Use NEFT. You're uploading a bulk salary file with 50 transactions. NEFT's batch processing is designed for exactly this — no per-transaction rush, completely free, and all 50 transfers settle within the next batch window.

NEFT ✓ — Free, batch-optimized, no limit

Sending ₹500 to a Friend Without Account Details

Use UPI instead. For small, casual transfers where you don't have the recipient's account number and IFSC, UPI is far more convenient. IMPS via MMID works too, but UPI has largely replaced MMID for person-to-person transfers.

UPI ✓ — No IFSC needed, instant, free

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I schedule an NEFT transfer for a future date?

Yes. Most banks allow you to schedule NEFT transfers up to 30 days in advance. This is particularly useful for recurring payments like rent, EMI, or vendor invoices.

What happens if RTGS fails after debiting my account?

If RTGS fails due to incorrect beneficiary details, the amount is automatically reversed to your account — typically on the same day or the next business day. The RBI mandates timely reversals for failed RTGS transactions.

Is IMPS safer than NEFT/RTGS?

All three systems are equally secure as they operate under RBI-regulated infrastructure. The security depends on your banking credentials and device security, not the transfer method itself.

Can NRIs use NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS?

Yes, NRIs with NRO/NRE accounts can use all three transfer methods within India. For international remittances, you'll need SWIFT wire transfers instead. Check our SWIFT Code Lookup for international transfers.

Why does my bank still show NEFT timings if it's 24x7?

While RBI has mandated 24x7 availability since December 2019, some banks may still display legacy timings on their portals. The transactions will process in the next available batch regardless of when you initiate them.

Can I cancel an IMPS transfer after initiating it?

No. IMPS transfers are instant and irrevocable — once initiated successfully, they cannot be cancelled. This is why it's critical to double-check the beneficiary's account number and IFSC code before confirming.
