FREQUENTLY ASKED

What is MICR Code?

MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) is a 9-digit numeric code printed on cheques using special magnetic ink. It enables automated cheque processing and clearing through the banking system.

MICR vs IFSC — What's Different?

IFSC (11 alphanumeric) is for digital transfers — NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, UPI. MICR (9 numeric) is for physical cheque clearing and ECS. Both are unique per branch and essential for banking identity.

Where to Find MICR on Cheque?

Look at the bottom of your cheque — you'll see numbers printed in a special font. The 9-digit MICR code is usually the second set of numbers, right after the cheque number and before the account number.

Is MICR Still Required?

Yes! While digital payments are growing, MICR is still essential for cheque-based transactions, ECS mandates, insurance claims, and government subsidy disbursements. RBI mandates MICR for all clearing houses.
