The Iron Gate Rules

01

Never Share Your OTP

No bank, insurance company, TRAI, or government official will ever ask for your One-Time Password (OTP). If someone calls claiming to be from your bank's "KYC Department" or "RBI Office" asking for an OTP, hang up immediately.

OTP fraud is India's #1 banking fraud method. The fraudster calls with insider-sounding knowledge (last 4 digits of your card, your bank name) and pressures you into sharing the OTP before it expires. The moment you share it, funds are transferred out instantly.

⚠ This alone causes 60% of all banking fraud in India
02

Verify IFSC Before Every RTGS

Before making a high-value RTGS or NEFT transfer, always verify the IFSC code using an official directory like IFSCTeam. Never rely on IFSC codes provided via SMS, WhatsApp messages, or emailed invoices — these are prime vectors for man-in-the-middle attacks.

Post bank mergers (SBI, Canara, PNB consolidations), thousands of old IFSC codes were deactivated. A single wrong or deprecated code can lock your funds in a reversal loop for 3-7 business days.

✓ Verify at ifscteam.com before every transfer above ₹1 Lakh
03

UPI PIN is ONLY for Sending

You NEVER need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. This is one of the most exploited misconceptions in India. If a QR code, a Paytm/PhonePe link, or a person asks for your PIN to "accept a refund" or "complete a payment request," it is a guaranteed scam.

Fraudsters create "collect request" links that look like incoming payments. Entering your PIN on these requests sends money TO the fraudster, not to you.

⚠ PIN = SEND only. Receiving requires NO action from you.
04

Use Only Official Banking Apps

Only download banking apps from the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Fraudulent "modded" versions of popular apps (BHIM, PhonePe, Google Pay) can steal your credentials silently in the background.

Always verify the app developer name matches your bank's official name. SBI's official app developer is "State Bank of India" — not third-party clones like "SBI Easy Pay" or "SBI Express."

✓ Check developer name + read reviews before installing

Phishing Alert: The "KYC Expired" Scam Dissected

India's most common banking scam in 2025. Fraudsters send SMS messages stating your "KYC has expired" and your "Bank Account will be blocked in 24 hours." These messages contain a link to a fake banking portal that looks identical to the real one. Real banks never send KYC update links via SMS or WhatsApp.

🚨 Fake SMS Pattern

"Dear SBI Customer, Your KYC is expired. Your account will be blocked. Update now: bit.ly/sbi-kyc-update"

✅ Real Bank Communication

Banks only notify via official app notifications or registered letters. They never include third-party links or shortened URLs in security-related SMS.

⚡ Rule: If SMS has a link + urgency, it's 99% fake. Visit branch or official website directly.

Frequently Asked

What is the national cyber crime helpline number in India?

The national cyber crime helpline number is 1930. It is operational 24/7. You can also report online at cybercrime.gov.in. Call immediately if you suspect fraud — time is critical for fund recovery.

How do I know if an SMS about KYC update is fake?

Real banks never send KYC update links via SMS or WhatsApp. If you receive such a message, do not click the link. Visit your bank branch directly or log into the official net banking portal manually by typing the URL in your browser. Shortened URLs (bit.ly, tinyurl, etc.) in banking SMS are always suspicious.

Do I need to enter my UPI PIN to receive money?

Absolutely not. You NEVER need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. PIN is only required when you are SENDING money. If any app, QR code, or person asks for your PIN to "receive a refund," it is a 100% scam. Decline immediately and report the sender.

What should I do if I accidentally share my OTP with a fraudster?

Act within minutes: (1) Call your bank's 24/7 helpline immediately to block your account. (2) Call 1930 to report the fraud. (3) Change your net banking password and UPI PIN from a safe device. Speed is everything — banks can freeze transactions within the first 30 minutes.

Is it safe to use net banking on public Wi-Fi?

No. Public Wi-Fi at airports, cafes, and railway stations is a significant security risk. Hackers can intercept sessions using packet-sniffing tools. Always use your mobile data or a secure private network for any banking transaction. This applies to UPI, net banking, and even checking account balances.
